Making A Start

How to get started (somewhat belatedly) in the New Year?
The combination of meteorologists, virologists and Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson have done their best to keep me at home in the warm, though I have sneaked out occasionally for a bit of exercise.....

.....but that's the kind of weather we've been enjoying, usually without the little patches of sunshine, though we haven't had the snow which has been "enjoyed" by other parts of these islands. I have though been sorting out some photos from last year, ones that never made it to this blog, mostly through not being part of any overall theme.

I did, at one time, have an idea to make a series of animal portraits, but didn't get far beyond the little flock of sheep that contentedly graze on Shepreth Moor.

But those two photos are as far as I got with that little project!

Then a month or so ago I thought I'd do some close-ups of frost on leaves....

I took several but that's the only one that pleased me.

At some time last year somebody removed some old kitchen or bathroom tiles and, rather than dispose of them properly, decided to dump them alongside a little-used track. Even more inexplicably someone else then came along and took a photo. For some reason which I can't start to explain I rather like the end result!

Then sometimes I start fiddling about with pictures of flowers and come up with some sort of mandala-like thingy.

Then again I might go out on another little walk to see if Spring is on its way....

Soon maybe.

Take care.

  1. It's great when something as ugly as fly-tipped broken tiles can be made into something as good as that!

  2. I rather fancy a series of animal portraits - your sheep ones are great. But of course you need to wait until they are all let out for Spring.
Also agree with Carruthers about the tile photograph.

  4. Hi John - Wonderful – love the animal portraits … especially bearing in mind they’re rare breeds … while your frost on leaves is beautiful. People are extraordinary with what they do with their rubbish … wretched, thoughtless, humans.

Your Mandala is pretty in pink … while the gloomy skies look a bit like ours here today … but it is getting lighter. Take care and look forward to more photos - Hilary

  5. I kind of like your broken tiles photo...and especially am pleased by the mandala with leaf center. Sheep are not an animal I'm familiar with, so their portraits are an opportunity to look closer. Keep on walking about.

  7. I like this compilation of photos, John. A great idea. Makes me want to see if I can to something like it. Maybe I'll find something that isn't a photograph of the sky. Now that will keep me busy. Thank you for the inspiration.

  8. A lot of time on your hands to play with photos. Happy New Year! Hoping our new year gets better but lots to overcome after 1/6 insurrection/domestic terrorist attack.

  9. Someone’s rubbish became someone’s art. The mandala made me feel like that I’m in the pink. First snowfall of this season pleased me a lot today after being chilled to the bone for about two weeks without snow. Take care, and enjoy walking.

  11. I love sheep photos, and reading about modern day shepherds and shepherdesses (there are many) educates me on just how hard a job it is, especially in winter!
Great shots all John - and I envy you having fields to walk through in I'm sure a good strong pair of waterproof wellies!

Welcome back - wishing you a happy new year - stay well and safe.

  15. It’s been rather bleak and cold here for several weeks. After a few frost photos and bare trees, it’s been hard to find subject matter. I like the tile photo too.

You should do more animal portraits as well.

  19. Good to hear you're doing the photographic equivalent of 'pottering' as well. I'm longing for another 'proper' walk and visit somewhere but the very same restrictions you list are forcing me into diversionary activities too, some satisfying and others less so.

  20. The tile pile makes an intriguing piece of art! I prefer the sheep though. I hope you will be able to resume your long walks soon. I would be insane by now if it weren’t for the forests and sea walks we have.

  24. The sheep are lovely. I guess we are all just trying to keep busy at home. Sort of a rehearsal to when we are really old and can't go out places either. At least spring is coming no matter what - plants will grow and flowers will bloom.

  25. I love those sheep photos. They all seem to love you too seeing that they all posed and looked at the camera. Hope you have a wonderful new year taking photos and wonderful strolls through the countryside.
