A Splash Of Colour

As I tootled along on my bicycle this afternoon I spied something which I really wasn't expecting - a field of peonies!

Although there's quite a bit of commercial flower growing around here, most of it takes place inside polytunnels, away from the prying eye of the camera. I've often walked by fields of peonies though, but usually they are cut while in bud and shipped off so that they open just before the shops sell them. This peculiar year though, whether through lack of pickers or perhaps because florists are not considered an essential service, they seem to have been left to flower in the fields. So, if you can't go out and buy them, at least you can enjoy them through these photos.

Take care.

  4. My few precious blooms are over now - I'd give almost anything to actually walk through that field - the fragrance must be so amazing!
Just checked the airlines - no flights across the pond yet so I'm not going to make it, sigh!
John, thanks for sharing with we flower lovers.

  6. How beautiful! I do love peonies. I planted a pink one last year, and had hoped for a bloom this year but looks like that's not happening. My white ones are getting battered by so much rain. I may just have to pick them and bring them inside to enjoy.

  12. Oh my, you lucky man!! My early peony started blooming a few days ago, against the front fence. I look forward to the half dozen plants in the back garden which are pregnant with bloom. My MIL had a beautiful rectangle of peonies, but I have never seen such a glorious display as that in your post!!!

  13. What a wonderful field of peonies to discover but what a sad financial loss it must also mean for the owner of these fields.
