Neighbours

After the sunniest May on record the weather has turned more "English" this week with overcast skies and the threat of showers. It's a bit cooler too, just right for a walk in fact, so I wandered to the neighbouring village of Shepreth to take a few photos. Here are a selection of pictures from my walk:

The cottage on the corner of Angle Lane which everybody admires.

Thatched barn at Tyrell's Hall Farm

The "hidden" cottage

Roadside flowers

Houses in High Street

The River Shep

The Plough, the villagers kept the pub open when the brewery threatened to close it.
Closed only temporarily by Coronavirus.

Old railway buildings beside the station,
now used by small businesses.

In normal times I could hop aboard this train and be in my home village
in three or four minutes. But, as we are advised to avoid using public transport unless absolutely necessary, I'll enjoy the walk back.

I'll show you some more photos of the village in the next post.

Take care.

  3. I enjoyed this walk to the village and would have liked to stop into the Shepreth Plough if it was open and hopefully it will be able to resume business at some point. Too many small business are giving up and shutting down, victims of the virus outbreak. The thatched roofs on those houses always have fascinated me and I wonder if they are sturdy. Maybe one day you will take us for a ride on that train, but a walk was really nicer now, John.

  4. That is such a beautiful little town! I'm glad that you got a bit of rain. I was talking to my friend in Cromer a couple of days ago and he was thinking he might have to water his garden if he didn't get any rain soon.

  8. I was also amazed by the view of the cottage on the corner of Angle Lane ..., like in a fairy tale. Then I also like the view of the house on High Street.

    Thank you for sharing, John.
    Have a nice weekend.

  9. My word, if there was ever a stereotypical image of England (for those of us who don't live there at least) that thatched cottage is it! If I could sit there enjoying scones and clotted cream I would think that perfection in life had finally arrived!

  10. John, please advise when the cottage on the corner of Angle Lane goes up for sale!!!!! They must leave the daisies and climbing roses though!
So absolutely lovely there - thank you for sharing your walk through such perfect English countryside.
Now I'm truly homesick - and of course can't come home yet.

  20. I remember a page in one of my school books that that was devoted to a "bird's eye view of an English Manor" and this is just a wonderful view of an English village, and I enjoyed it so much!

  22. Hi John - easy to walk back now while the weather is better ... but if you were down here - you'd be blown home! I must get to the beach and see how the sea is doing. Stunning village photos though - very neat and quite delightful to look at - all the best Hilary
