In the corner of the Gransden Showground stands the Homefare And Produce Marquee. It's how the show involves the whole community with such diverse categories as Best Jar of Marmalade, Sample of Soft Handicraft, Vase Of Mixed Garden Flowers, Heaviest Vegetable Marrow and even Four Cheese Straws made by competitor aged 6 and under. When we arrived the judging had just finished and everyone was cramming in to see who'd won.
Apart from deciding which was the heaviest marrow (summer squash, zucchini, call it what you will), which anyone can see by glancing at my 11th photo, the judges must have had a difficult task to choose the winners from the 80 or so categories.

ReplyDeleteI used to love the dahlias and chrysanthemums at our village show, growing up - so different, vibrant and blousy in every colour imaginable; very different to the more workaday things my parents grew. An annual treat.

ReplyDeleteI've been a steward for the cookery classes at the show I enter and the judges have a really difficult job - although they always start by dismissing the entries that haven't followed the schedule exactly.
ReplyDeleteDid those eggs win a prize? Always thought they had to be all exactly the same size and colour - at least they did where we used to live.
Yes, I think they did; in the category "Six Eggs Attractively Displayed". There were other categories too which maybe had different rules.
DeleteI always enjoyed looking round the produce and handicraft sections of shows. Unfortunately, most of my time at shows was spent working on the National Trust stand. A quick flip round in my lunch hour was it. So I do enjoy seeing photographs like the ones you were sharing. Locally, we have an Eisteddfod. No produce and flowers, but lots and lots of handicrafts and baking in addition to poetry and song.
ReplyDeleteGreat produce on display. The onions look exceptionally fine. Theses shows - fall fairs we call them here - are throwbacks to a simpler time, perhaps a reminder we all need.
ReplyDeleteMy granddaughters enjoy entering items to be judged. The 9 year old got prize ribbons and money for her blueberry pie, eggs, flower arrangement, potholders and quilt. My 6 year old granddaughter who lives in Buffalo was here for the fair and entered a flower arrangement using my flowers. She got first prize with cash award too.

ReplyDeleteIf I were judging, I would probably just have to give everything a number and choose a number. There sure are some beautiful flowers there.

ReplyDeleteWe have attended many similar fairs in years past, but unfortunately there are none we've gone to as essentially city dwellers. It must have been difficult for the judges to decide from the selections shown in this post.
