A Date With Heather

The last week in August seems to be about the right time to meet up with heather in East Anglia, though it's by no means as widespread as in other parts on Britain. Here it's confined to a strip of sandy land in North Norfolk and the Suffolk Sandlings. So I made a note in my diary to visit Westleton Heath in Suffolk. Here are a selection of photos with the heathers set off by  green bracken, yellow gorse and the silver trunks of the birch trees.

Take care.

  1. This is beautiful! Mom always wanted heather in her gardens. It is way to warm here for it to do well.

  6. Our little town is surrounded by gorse (do you know you should never kiss your boy/girl friend when there is no gorse in bloom?) (it blooms here and there all year and you can always find at least one flower). But you know I love silver birch - But those shots of silver birch trunks (especially the one with the ferns) are right up my street - beautiful - there isn't another trunk as beautiful (and that includes elephants.)

  10. I grew a couple of heather plants...and was surprised to find it had reall rough branches. I sure would not have wanted to walk through it with bare legs! Or maybe these plants were exceptions.

    1. Not exceptions at all, it's a very tough plant, as it needs to be to thrive on the Scottish mountains, for example.

  11. Hi John - for some reason I think back to my youth ...and wonder if Bagshot/Chobham heaths sit on similar rock formations ... sandy. Gorgeous place to visit and I'm so pleased you gave us a chance to join you. Cheers Hilary

  14. Lovely! Although taller, it reminds me in color and the way it spreads out of desert sand verbena.
