The Roses Of Rose Lane

Rose Lane doesn't get its name from the roses that grow there, but from The Rose pub that used to stand near to one end of it. However some of those who choose to live along this quiet little byway are keen rose-growers, making it a pleasure to wander through at this time of year.

I also wandered into Dolphin Lane while taking these photos; there are no dolphins in Dolphin Lane (other than one that's featured on a weather-vane) - it gets its name from another pub.

Take care.

  2. Some beauties there - I hope they are fragrant as well as lovely. I think that a rose without scent is a travesty.
I particularly like the yellow one (apperture priority setting?)

  4. If I lived on Rose Lane and my thumb was even a pale shade of green I would grow roses. I live on Osprey Drive, but so far have not raised any Ospreys!

  5. I have been meaning to ask, John, about the origin of your blog name, "Stargoose and Hanglands". You perhaps explained this when you first started blogging before I found your site, but there are perhaps others like me who were not followers then.

    1. If you click on the "What's In A Name" tag just under the header that will lead you to an explanation. Sort of.

  7. Love the old streets called after old inns. I did wonder if you were going to say the lane was named after a family called Rose. Your photos of the roses on Rose Lane are wonderful:)

  8. I love roses, especially old varieties and scented ones. They seem to be having a little resurgence, having dropped in popularity for some years perhaps due to the work they need to keep them looking good. I really, really like the 7th photo against the light wall.

  9. Oh my, so many gorgeous roses! If I were there, I'd think I were in Heaven. Thank you so much for sharing. You have a wonderful day, hugs, Edna B.

  10. There is something about roses that lifts the spirit and heart. Always beautiful and sometimes so fragrant it's a gift to lean down and take a sniff. Love these photos.

  12. OK, that is just so lovely. And I bet the fragrances are wonderful, too. The 7th photo is absolutely stunning. I also really like the one of the white roses as I am a big fan of white roses.

  16. Beautiful images, John. Makes me want to be in the U.K., especially during this period in which my country appears to be descending into chaos at every level.

  17. Ah! My dream lane, John! I do think roses are my favorite variety of flowers. The photos are gorgeous -- too bad there's no 'scratch and sniff' on the internet!

  18. How lovely to see all those wonderful roses just as ours have come to their end.

  19. So, you’re one of those who are showing photos of roses. All the roses are beautiful but my favorite is the 7th. If I lived on the Rose Lane, I’d be more motivated to grow roses. There is a bypass called “Hydrangea Lane”, but no “Rose Lane” in my vicinity, though there are houses boasting of gorgeous roses here and there.

  20. Thanks John for posting these beautiful roses today with so much negative news events, it's wonderful to look at these images. I really liked that purple one (my favorite color). I can image your walk along Rose Lane was filled with beautiful scents as well. Too bad the Rose Pub is no longer there as it would have been a good place to stop into at the end of your walk.

  21. Roses are such a favorite. I used to have nearly 100. Old age is reining me in, but I do still have about 10. So many colors and scented ones are really special.
    Beautiful photos.

  23. A pub at the end of every lane, that's so English 😀 Beautiful roses John, the yellow and orange always have the best perfume 🌹 Happy weekend.

  24. Roses in your part of the world are more advanced than the ones in Connecticut. The roses in Elizabeth Park just began to bloom yesterday. The peak is the third week of June. (And I am going to wager that the Rose pub was named because of roses in the area, so it has gone full circle.)

    1. It's a possible explanation but I wouldn't put money on it. The naming of most pubs is shrouded in mystery though many are from the obvious element of some local squire's coat of arms.
