As promised, a few pictures of the heavy horses at the Haddenham Steam Rally. If the weather had been cooler I'd planned to spend longer watching the horses being paraded in their show ring. Most of the horse show takes place in the corner of the showground, away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the main show, though some which are shown regularly also enter the main ring.
And just a few photos of other things that caught my eye....

ReplyDeleteThe heavy horses and carriages are one of the things I try and watch at the Suffolk Show when they parade, they come from miles away
I looked to see where Haddenham is, but a bit too far for a day out for me.

ReplyDeleteGive a man a dangerous chain saw and apart from cutting down trees, he can sculpt with it! I love the horses best. Tractors tend to leave me cold, but the gigantic shire horses are always a pleasure to watch.

ReplyDeleteJohn, those three horses trotting in front of the cart - perfectly in step and quite obviously enjoying it - a sight to behold. And I adore that lovely horse with the very 'shaggy mane' and the silver plaited decoration. Thank you for remembering to show us the horses. I love the way folk continue to keep the breeds going now that they are no longer needed to work - a different kind of horsepower has made them redundant.

ReplyDeleteI knew an elderly man who loved his work horses. The thing that he could not stand was the horses with bobbed tails. In his mind it was like cutting off a man's arms and sitting him in a field of biting flies. I think of Mr. Ferry every single time I see that.

ReplyDeleteIt looks a superb Steam Rally with so much of interest to see. I love watching people carving wood - they turn out so many beautiful items. The horses are beautiful and must have been wonderful to watch. I should think the beer was welcome with all the hot weather :)
ReplyDeleteIt makes us all realize that these beautiful animals have rendered more than their fair share of service to humans over the centuries, and we have not always treated them well.
ReplyDeleteWhat magnificent animals. When I moved here, about 50 years ago, quite a few people still used draft horses on their farms. Even the utility companies sometimes used them to pull cable on steep hills. We had a little work pony, and used her often. She was quite a character. There used to be a horse pull at the county fair, which was discontinued due to its inhumaneness. Nowadays it is rare to see a draft horse, and I really miss the sight of them.

ReplyDeleteI love the heavy horses. My great grandfather was a horseman all his life, looking after the heavy horses on farms, so they are in my blood I think.
