You've already had a sneak preview from the first picture, but as I approached down a narrow Cambridge street I began to wonder if I was in the right place. These terraced homes generally have miniscule plots of land at the back with barely space for a bicycle, a rubbish bin and a scraggy rose bush if you're lucky.
But I knocked at the door anyway and was welcomed in by John and Maurice who live here and have created the garden.
There was a small exhibition of John's stylish paintings, seen above in the wall mirror. But the eye was immediately drawn to the far end of the room where wide doors opened out on to.....
I certainly wasn't expecting that!
The garden acts like a sort of outside room, with a cushioned seat where you can sit and absorb the beauty all around you.
There's the gentle sound of running water in the jewel-like pool.
Last year this garden was placed third in the Gardeners' World national competition, though I imagine it must have been a close-run thing.
Artful use is made of mirrors which give the illusion of a larger space and also reflect sunlight into the shadows.
It's the kind of garden that you feel privileged to be able to visit.
Back inside I was able to look at some of Maurice's bookbinding and enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of cake before departing.
Take care.
An idyllic garden!
ReplyDeleteWow. Incredible artistry with nature. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe house and the garden are both quite incredible and I am sure you were delighted with your visit.
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning garden in a small space!
ReplyDeleteThat's an incredible garden, and well tended I'm sure. If a petal should fall, it's whisked away, because every corner has beauty in it!
ReplyDeleteWhat an unexpected surprise - Maurice and John have created a unique Moorish gem hidden away in the middle of Cambridge.
ReplyDeleteYes, I thought Moorish too, but then I saw a stone Buddha, what looks like a pagoda, and a rather Gothic-looking mirror - a rather eclectic mix, but beautiful nevertheless.
DeleteHi John - gosh what a treat ... I'd want to visit again and again! So gorgeous, both inside and out ... love the use of the mirrors - thank you to Maurice and John for sharing your visit, and to you for the delightful photos - stunning! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteI bet you felt like you had stepped into another world! What a treasure chest of beauty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a truly beautiful place. How kind of Maurice and John for opening the home and garden for such a view. Thank you for going and sharing this. Truly lovely.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful garden hidden away behind the house and how welcoming and talented the owners sound and generous to open their home for charity too:)
ReplyDeleteWow, that garden is absolutely gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this beauty, John.
Oh, that is just gorgeous. Love the mirrors, creating extra depth.
ReplyDeleteTruly a jewel! Amazingly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous oasis they have there!
ReplyDeleteThe well positioned arches draw your eye past the flowers so you think the garden is just the beginning. Very skillfully done. Lovely collection of colours and textures, and using as much vertical space as possible. Inspiring.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful small garden
