January's Garden

It's always been a matter of some contention - for me at least - as to whether the The Cambridge University Botanic Garden is singular or plural. For years I've called it the Botanic Gardens, though recently I've noticed that all the signs say "Garden" (singular). However any visitor will see that it contains within it many differently themed gardens, beds and walks. My plan this year is to investigate one of these distinct areas each month in 2019, starting with the Winter Garden, which I leave to introduce itself...

As you can see it was a gloomy, overcast and sometimes drizzly day, though perhaps that's the kind of weather that the Winter Garden is designed to cheer up.

Take care.

  1. It is indeed a 'Masterclass'!

'The Winter Garden' images are a joy to see and certainly cheered a cold winters day!

  2. My snowdrops are coming out in the garden which always brightens up the cold winter. The botanical garden ia a place for insperation and I see the Christmas roses are in bloom as well, shame mine seem to be a liitle behind.

  3. I always check the sign to see whether it is Garden or Gardens, because both designations are used. Sometimes, however, there seems to be confusion and both terms are used at the same location! It is not confined to gardens either. Years ago I lived on Peneil Road - or Peniel Road depending on whether you entered from the east or the west!

  4. Such a treasure. The blooms and coloured foliage are good for the spirit this time of year!

Your winter looks like a wet early autumn day here.

  5. The colour in the winter garden would cheer up the gloomy day. The snowdrops are beautiful and the witch hazel too:)

  6. That's a lovely place. And really showcases the difference in our climates. Even though I believe you are further north, there is so much green in that garden! Here, everything is gray, very little green. Most of those plants would not survive in our gardens, sadly.

  7. These are so lovely and colorful. The first shot of garden plants was my fav, because texture of foliage was most diverse!

  11. John that winter garden is absolutely exquisite - if only I could replicate a tiny bit of it on my patch I would be satisfied.

  13. There is much to love here...my first love WAS the snow drops, I think they are called here. And then The Bench took that place...or at least was of equal love...then I come to the kinky, curly bush/tree and I so love that! I at one time knew its name but cannot think now.

  15. Amazing how colourful winter plants can be. Love the snowdrops or whatever they are called. Dull days often bring out the colour better.

  20. Beautiful array of colors for winter. The camellias are blooming here. They do brighten up the otherwise dull landscape in our garden.

  21. There's such a lot of colour in the Winter Garden John, I wasn't expecting that! When I talk about our Botanical Gardens it's always in the plural. How beautifully they are looked after, gorgeous shots here ✨

  22. That made me wonder....my closest botanic garden is the same...Botanic Garden (with many different gardens contained within). Beautiful whichever way you say it!

  23. Hi John - stunning photos - I know some of the plants but certainly not all. I'll enjoy seeing your garden selection, within the Botanic Garden - cheers Hilary
